Customers often rely on the progressive stamping process for high-volume metal stamping, but why? The process lends itself to high-volume production runs because multiple operations are all rolled into a singular production method led by automation and superior quality management systems.

Die-Matic Corporation explains the relationship between progressive stamping and its preferred high-volume run.

How the Progressive Stamping Process Works

The progressive stamping process begins with sheet metal coil-fed on a belt through a series of stations that all rest within one single die. As the sheet metal begins its journey through the process, it goes through a series of different operations including punching, bending, coining, and cutting.

As the part begins to take shape into its final form, it moves into the final station where the last parts of the stamping process takes place and ultimately quality control measures can take place including part validation and quality tests.

Why High-Volume Projects Get a Boost

High volume projects are a large reason why OEMs rely on the progressive stamping process. An operation that performs the function of multiple stamping styles into one largely automated system is favorable for OEMs to rely on quick turnaround times.

  • Progressive stamping features a continuous feed that keeps the press running and features minimal stop and start times. This leads to faster cycles, better market readiness, and less labor costs which trickle down to the customer.
  • The progressive stamping process is heavily automated, which further drives down labor costs on manufacturers and subsequently lowers the overall cost for customers.
  • When tooling is in place, progressive stamping can be a highly repeatable manufacturing method. Additionally with tooling, the cost per part ratio eventually offset the initial tooling costs.

Practical Applications

It’s not just about creating a high-volume amount of products that warrant running the progressive stamping process. There are other factors that should be considered. For example, if your team has a relatively simple design, a low volume stamping method might be better suited as progressive stamping is engineered for multiple operations on complex designs. Quality matters no matter what the project is, but, if your team values consistent quality compared to quick prototype changeovers, consider using progressive stamping.

One of the biggest considerations for progressive stamping is that it is geared toward parts that require tight tolerances, and the decisions are driven by throughput as well as cost per part ratio that can offset high tooling costs.
